A microchip is a small, electronic chip about the size as a grain of rice and enclosed in a glass cylinder. When scanned, the chip transmits it’s identification number using passive RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology on to the scanner, which displays the number on a screen. The microchip contains a unique ID number for your pet, similar to the social security number for individuals. This number and your contact information are stored in an online database or Pet Registry.

No, the microchip installed under the skin of your pet is not a GPS device. The microchip does not have battery or power sources which are required for GPS, nor do they constantly transmit location information like a mobile device. Microchips react to radio-wave signals if and only when initiated by a scanner.

The microchip is as small as a grain of rice, and is injected under the skin of your pet, using common syringes. The process is no more painful than getting a flu-shot for your pet. Microchipping, like any injection, takes a few seconds only and does not require anesthesia.

A microchip can be implanted during a routine visit to your Vet or Pet clinic. Your Vet will implant the microchip, which comes preloaded in a sterile applicator, in to your pet. Your vet will remove the chip from a plastic sachet it comes in and inject it under the loose skin between the shoulder blades, of your pet, using common syringes. The procedure is simple, painless, does not require anesthesia, and similar to administering a routine shot for a vaccine or medicine. The process takes a few seconds, and your pet will not react to it any more than what he/she would to a vaccine shot.
